Often when I'm replacing a website with Drupal or uploading an upgraded Drupal site, I leave the old site intact and then upload the new site to a subfolder (or subdomain) on the server. The issue then is that you have to tell Drupal to serve the files from the subfolder. To do this in Drupal 6, make the following changes;

1. In the root of the web server, edit the .htaccess file to use the following code;

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^$ /new/ [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /new/$1 [L]

2. In the Drupal folder (which I've named "new") edit the .htaccess file to use the following code;

RewriteBase /new
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /new/index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

3. Edit the setting.php file and enable the Base URL (by removing the hash);

$base_url = 'http://www.example.com';

BAM! You're done.
